Beidaihe National Wetland Park
Beidaihe National Wetland Park
Overview
Beidaihe National Wetland Park, situated in the central coastal region of Beidaihe district, Qinhuangdao city, Hebei province, is a significant ecological site in China. The park's ecosystem is primarily supported by the Beidaihe Wetland Tide Flats and the Xinhe River System, supplemented by 15,000 acres of coastal shelter forests. Established initially as a pilot project in March 2011, the park was officially recognized as a National Wetland Park on December 31, 2015.
The park is divided into three functional zones: the Ecological Conservation Zone, the Forest Oxygen Bar, and the Wetland Bird Protection Zone. With 93 families, 257 genera, and 367 plant species, including 21 varieties and 2 subspecies, the park boasts diverse flora. It also serves as a vital habitat for avian species, with 412 bird species identified within its boundaries, representing one-third of all bird species in China. Among these, nearly 70 species are nationally protected, highlighting the park's importance as a migratory corridor and one of the four major international birdwatching destinations.
Biodiversity
The biodiversity of Beidaihe National Wetland Park is remarkably rich. The park's plant life consists of 93 families, 257 genera, and 367 species, including 21 varieties and 2 subspecies. Specifically, the vegetation includes 2 families, 2 genera, and 4 species of ferns; 4 families, 6 genera, and 8 species of gymnosperms; and a significant array of angiosperms with 87 families, 248 genera, and 355 species. The herbaceous plants number 260 species, while woody plants comprise 95 species (56 tree species and 39 shrub species). A significant proportion of these plant species belong to the Asteraceae, Rosaceae, Fabaceae, Lamiaceae, Liliaceae, and Poaceae families, which collectively account for 45.3% of the total plant diversity.
Conservation Efforts
The establishment and conservation of Beidaihe National Wetland Park have been driven by various developmental and conservation initiatives. The park's creation was sanctioned through a notification from the State Forestry Administration in March 2011, authorizing the construction of the pilot national wetland park. Following this, in November 2015, the park's forestry renovation and construction design plan received approval. The official designation as a National Wetland Park was granted in December 2015 after passing the pilot inspection by the State Forestry Administration.
In 2017, Beidaihe National Wetland Park was included in the "13th Five-Year Plan for National Wetland Conservation," underscoring its importance in China's broader ecological protection strategy. The park's role as a migratory bird hub and its significance for the conservation of the Yellow and Bohai Sea wetlands have reinforced its conservation value.
Furthermore, in April 2019, the park was recognized as a "Nature Education School (Base)" and awarded the corresponding plaque. In February 2021, the Chinese Forestry Society designated it as part of the fifth batch of the National Forestry and Grassland Science Popularization Bases, with the title valid from 2021 to 2024, further enhancing its role in conservation and education.
